Redesign for the Mall at Chestnut Hill
Simon Property Groups has announced plans to expand the original footprint of the Mall at Chestnut Hill in order to accommodate three new restaurants as well as improvements to the façade of the building.
The changes have been attributed to competition amongst retail developments around Route 9. New blueprints filed with the city include plans for patio seating and new signs. Alexandra Anantha, a senior city planner for Newton, explained that Simon Property’s modifications are primarily to increase the visibility of the Mall at Chestnut Hill from Route 9.
Newton Mayor Setti Warren is excited about Route 9 and the recent development of the area. Just across the way, the Chestnut Hill Square development is under construction. The project will include an extensive 340,000 square feet of retail, residential, and office space.
Furthermore, the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center is undergoing expansions. Phase II of center redevelopment will begin with demolition and reconstruction of the former R.H. Stearns/Bloomingdale’s/Macy’s building. Additions to the center include: Bernard’s Gourmet Asian Cuisine, Davio’s Cucina, Del Frisco’s Grille, and Shake Shack (Boston Herald).
