Green Line Extension, Bitter or Sweet?

Green Line Extension

President Obama released the budget of $100 million in federal fiscal year 2015 supporting the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) Green Line Extension project (GLX) which benefits the economy and environment of Somerville and Medford communities in the upcoming several years.

“The Green Line Extension offers Somerville and the region both economic justice and environmental justice, connecting residents with jobs that pay a livable wage and health care while reducing the number of cars on the road and pollution in the air we all breathe, as well shifting us to a more sustainable mode of transit,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone.

Besides improving public transportation service, GLX project would also include opportunities for local business developments and for youth training. Businesses and residents from the cities of Cambridge, Somerville and Medford would also be eligible, noted MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott.

The extension plan has already begun with some bridge and roadway upgrades. The major utility relocation and site preparation will begin later this year. The full construction work is scheduled to start in the spring of 2015 and will continue for several years with the support from the federal government.
